The ingredients are the story.

Vanilla, pink peppercorn, oak and resin. A fragrance campaign that sells the smell rather than the face holding the bottle.

/01The Idea

Fragrance is the one category that cannot show you the product.

So most of it defaults to a face.

A bottle photographs as a piece of glass. The thing being sold is invisible, which is why the category leans so heavily on celebrity: if you cannot show the scent, show someone wearing it and hope the association does the work.

The alternative is to photograph what it is made of. Vanilla, resin, pink peppercorn and oak are all things an audience already has a sense memory of, so the picture does the smelling for them.

/02The Materials

Shot like food.

Vanilla pods with resin drawn between them in strands
Pink peppercorns scattered across a pale ground
Resin pulled between the pods, and pink peppercorn at the size you would photograph a jewel
The bottle, turning
Resin, running
Peppercorn, falling
/03The Product

Glass, oak, skin.

The bottle balanced on an oak block with a vanilla pod
The bottle on raw oak, warm rake light
Oak under the glass so the ingredient list is doing the set dressing
A hand lifting the stone cap from the bottle
The bottle resting against a chain on skin
The cap coming off, which is the only action a fragrance ever really has
/04The Face

Warm, close, unposed.

Portrait: the bottle held at the jaw, ingredients suspended around
Portrait with vanilla and resin suspended in the frame
The face is in the campaign, but it is holding the product rather than replacing it
Reclined portrait, ingredients falling above the face, the house mark set in the frame
Lying back, the ingredients fall rather than float — the same set-up, moving
One pod
/05What we were testing

Whether a scent can be sold on its materials.

Take the celebrity out and the campaign has to earn attention on craft: how resin moves, how oak takes a rake light, how close you can get to a peppercorn before it stops being an ingredient and starts being a landscape.

It is also the cheapest test in the category. Everything here is a tabletop, which means a house can see the direction before committing to a face, a location or a fee.
